An Update to the Public Library Market from Baker & Taylor

Throughout the pandemic, we've made it a priority to regularly communicate with our library partners. We hope this communication provides a useful update regarding progress we've made in our operations and the upcoming challenges that may affect our business in the near term.

The impacts of the pandemic on the entire industry are now coming to light. Our market is experiencing staffing issues in facilities and transportation, as well as cost increases across the supply chain. We anticipate that freight and transportation disruption will be an issue for the balance of the calendar year, and printing production constraints will continue into the first quarter of 2022.

To mitigate the impact on our library partners, we recommend pre-ordering titles early to ensure copies are received at the time of release. Late orders and re-orders will likely experience a higher rate of delay. We also recommend libraries adopt a general practice of streamlining processes to help control future costs and improve turn times.

We are beginning to see warehouse staffing levels improve and are cautiously optimistic about a return to normal service levels; however, we are monitoring the numerous COVID-19 variants and related issues closely. Our primary concern is the health of our team members and library partners, and we will continue to keep safety at the core of our business decisions.
